Frederike Helwig
Frederike Helwig shoots commercial fashion photography that looks less commercial and more documentary, and is all the more commercially successful for it.
Born in Hamburg in 1968, and educated at Bournemouth College of Art and Design in the early 90′s, Fredi started receiving assignments while still in college. Not covering Bournemouth charity fashion shows for her local newspaper – for Terry Jones at i-D. Then Dazed, The Face, Vogue.d
“London in the 90′s was all about pushing boundaries and trying to change – what we thought was – the boring world of commercial photography into something more interesting. Our heroes lived and worked very close to us; we were a small community poised on the brink of greatness. And some of us made it, some of us didn’t”.
Helwig isn’t some bullshit scene photographer, propelled into success through note sharing and arse licking. Well, she might be. But her talent is undisputed and she remains unfalteringly accomplished and influential.
She manages to simultaneously capture the most honest, unusual and stylish moments in time, compliments often attributed to her inspirations Lindbergh and Avedon. These refined realities attracted the attention of now loyal clients Adidas, Nike, 10 Men, Peter Miles, Donald Schnieder and Lina Kustovskaya.
