The lovely Miss Lockwood joins the Sweet and Sound editorial team as our style contributor! A CSM fine art graduate, set designer, aspiring art director and lover of all things Russian, Amy likes to make films and take photographs (the candid, spontaneous kind). She’s also partial to a bit of Billie Holiday, likes the poetics of space, riding her Pashley, bargain hunting and weekends in the country with her man.

As a fan and practitioner of androgynous dressing, Amy has a keen interest in men’s clothing and promises to deliver inspired menswear content to the Sweet and Sound style section. So keen in fact, she’s already published some observant posts on the matter….

Mysterious UK producer Evian Christ is one Joshua Leary, and not only  has he signed to Tri-Angle Records, but he’s also playing a show this Saturday in London. We get the feeling this has been cooking for a while. Either way, Tri-Angle’s decelerated sounds seem the perfect fit for Mr. Christ. Hockney is always smart and well dressed. From his preppy schoolboy days as part of ‘the Bradford art mafia’ in the 1950s he has underpinned his dress with the staple suit, shirt and tie, the trench; classic elements of menswear. Yet Hockney breaks the mould of generic male dressing and exercises a style that is completely original. Ordinary cardigans, chinos, flat caps and plain suit pieces are made pop art cool with bursts of colour that seem perfectly measured and composed, like one of his candy coloured paintings. He is synonymous with polka dot scarves, humorous bow ties, intensely coloured cable knit jumpers, nerdy white plimsolls, bright braces, striped ties and rugby shirts. Coupled with his iconic shock of peroxide hair and dark rimmed round glasses, Hockney has a look that defines his personality, an extension of his work.

He manages to achieve this in a way that isn’t self-conscious, pretentious or contrived. That is, you would never see his style contained or reproduced in Topman (well not successfully anyway). It is as much about the way he wears his clothes as the individual choices he makes. Hockney is refreshingly not styled, he has an almost slap dash approach to dressing choosing clothes that are often oversized and eclectic mixes of patterns, colours and textures. It is easy to imagine him rummaging in a charity shop despite influencing designers such as Christopher Bailey. The overall result is one of good fun and creativity, a quirky English eccentric.

Introducing London College of Fashion MA_12 – showcasing the freshest and best young practitioners to graduate from the world renowned school of design.

Over the course of the week the college will showcase works from it’s MA Fashion photography, Fashion Artifact, Costume Design, Digital Fashion, Fashion & the Environment, Fashion Curation, Fashion Design Technology, Fashion Media Production and Fashion Footwear courses in an exhibition held at the Victoria House Basement in central London. The exhibition will open to the public from February 1st to 3rd, open daily from noon to 7pm throughout.

Additionally, the college will host it’s much anticipated MA Fashion catwalk event which takes place this Thursday at the Victoria and Albert Museum. This showcase is a platform for  students, carefully selected from the MA Fashion Design technology course, to reach the fashion industry and receive exposure as emerging talents.

Sweet and Sound will be following these events with show reviews, catwalk shots and follow-up profiles on the graduates who impressed us the most.
