The monkeys didn’t know about anything outside the zoo, and so the monkeys longed for death. Monkeys had been there for numerous generations and were a tight family unit, with few rivalries between the males; it was this companionship which meant that their only escape had to be a group one.

They had attempted a hunger strike but the keepers just increased the quality of the food for a few days and animal impulse forced them all to cave. It was clear that a more elaborate plan was needed so they rigged up a complicated system of twisted rope swings using branches as pulleys. The ropes crossed back and through and around the climbing platforms leaving little loops. The crowds and keepers were all highly entertained by the teamwork and wondered what kind of ritual the monkeys were about to perform.

With grunts and points and frowns the monkeys each hung their heads in different loops, with the mothers helping the babies into theirs. They all took one last melancholic sigh and stepped off their platforms to the horror of the onlookers, who only too late realised what was going on.

But due to their inability to tie knots, the monkeys had had to make do with folds and creases in the rope, which weren’t strong enough to catch the plummeting weight of a troupe of apes. The monkeys were saved and continued their unhappy life in the cage, staring into the outer shell which they couldn’t reach, waiting for input of food and medication from the controllers of their experience, wasting away their muscles and the days until their slow death of very old age.

Louis was a happy enough child to plunge into the teenage lull with quite some momentum. His rapidly developing body had caused him problems with classmates and his newly configured emotional structure—emergence of adult ego combined with a higher sense of empathy—caused him many internal conflicts.

He flagged up his turmoil like a poisonous tree frog by banding himself with black clothes, chrome accessories and limegreen make up; and he was given a wide berth by his peers accordingly. His parents, of course, loved their depressed son more than ever, and desperately tried to give him things to cling on to keep him going. They pushed him into hobbies and activities and were delighted when he agreed to keep visiting the zoo.

He would peer deep into the cages to try and make acquaintances with the bats and to see if he could strike a rapport with the kangaroos; but the break-through came with the monkeys. He had watched them scare off children from the sides of the cage but it didn’t look like they were trying to. They would come close, only to have the toddlers run off screaming at the first interaction.

Louis approached ready for excrement tossing or biting but was met with inquisitive, attentive monkeys who were ready to make friends, this was welcomed by Louis who lacked a single human being in the world to talk to—and most of the time he accepted that the stark truth of his doomed personality would last well into his old age.

The monkeys muttered and chatted to each other before turning to Louis and speaking together in difficult but assured gravelly tones: “Ki-i-i-i-u-ll u-u-s-z”

An intense moment of clarity swept over Louis because he could instantly identify with their primate point of view.

*

The monkey’s English was by no means perfect, they had learnt from children after all; but it was good enough for them to converse with Louis to plan for Operation Final Salvation. Louis poured a lot of time and effort into the project on the condition that he would be saved too.

He would sneak into the zoo at night with a set of boltcutters taken from his father’s shed. They would then all share in a deadly, but consumable, mixture which Louis had prepared: bleach, Dr. Pepper and deadlynightshade flowers picked from his mother’s garden.

The chosen one clipped the gates to the enclosure and entered among them. His hands were accurate enough to unscrew the lids of the bottles before he passed them round the group. The monkeys realised this was the moment their civilization had been waiting for and were bathed in excitement and a sense of honour that they were lucky enough to be at the scene of deliverance, in the presence of the liberator.

Louis unscrewed the final bottle and screamed out a long ceremonial speech in language too complicated for the monkeys to understand. He choked on many of his words and his teenage vocal cords squeaked whenever he became too excited, which was often, as his worldly suffering was about to end.

He rushed into his first few swigs before the awestruck monkeys had time to join him. They muttered and chattered amongst themselves as Louis dropped to the floor and started to violently convulse. In a few minutes of vomit, cramping and intense shining nausea Louis was dead and the monkeys had missed their window for a chance at divine escape.

They peered over to the cage door. They had seen keepers enter numerous times but they always kept an extra door shut. The monkeys had their first glimpse of uncaged scenery and ran off into the Chester night.
easy friends, been a minute since we’ve given you all anything to listen to. sooo sorry, but I had to put Vibes on ice for a while while (?) I sorted some stuff out. I’ve since come to some important conclusions, travelled a bit, met some very cool people, and grown a seriously manly beard. on a recent trip to London I was so lucky to make the acquaintance of one half of The Kemistry (TheKemistry.co.uk), singer/songwriter/all-around lovely woman Kemi. consisting of beatmaker Bare Beats and the young lady, The Kemi-stry (clever innit?)
