What are you up to today?

I only recently returned from a three-week journey to Japan and am now scanning tons of negatives, drinking coffee and trying to somehow ease back into my daily routine.

What are your plans for the summer?

Less work, more spare time than last year. Besides that, I’m open to everything.

What’s been your favourite project you’ve worked on so far?

Honestly it’s the two projects I’m working on right now.

As mentioned before, I returned from Japan a few days ago. I had no specific concept when I started my journey, I just took my camera and enough film with me. After a few days an idea evolved of creating a series that plays with my rather superficial touristic view and my fascination with simple, everyday objects in Japan that slightly differ in form or appearance from the objects that surround me here in Vienna – I am working on that series right now and can’t say where it’s going to head yet.

The second series that I keep myself occupied with imitates instructional pictures from product packages. I stage photographs that appear as those kind of pictures at first sight, but that have no connection to a real product or action. I can’t say too much yet, but in the next two months or so I will show the first works on my blog.

Is there anyone you’d like to collaborate with?

There are many photographers I discovered in the last few months that I’d love to collaborate with, but to name one … David Zilber. I found his blog Recidivism and immediately fell in love with his way of interpreting and photographing found situations and objects. Others that come to my mind: Santa Katkute, Brittney Meyer, Andreas Schimanski… there are so many artists whose work I admire and who I’d love to collaborate with.

What camera(s) do you use?

My workhorse, although a very unglamorous one, is my analog Canon EOS 50 (95 % of the time with a Sigma zoom lens and Kodak Portra 160). Until some months ago I mainly used Mamiya medium format cameras, but my photographic practice changed from a slow working process with staged objects to a more spontaneous way of taking photographs of found situations, so I wanted to use a camera again that was handy, fast and versatile. When it comes to shooting in the studio, I’m using more and more digital again.

Do you prefer analog or digital processes?

At the moment I can’t say … I used to be a very passionate fighter for film photography, and film is still my main medium, but due to the very fact that after the act of scanning my photographs I work with are a purely digital file anyways, I don’t know … I still love that certain aesthetic that analog film creates, but I do not avoid digital photography any more – both media have their specific qualities.

Who are 3 photographers/ artists you’re inspired by?

Besides the photographers I mentioned above: Marcel Duchamp, Sigmar Polke, Roman Signer.

What are your 3 favourite things about living in Vienna?

My girlfriend lives here, as well as my friends. In summer I love to walk home after going out to sober up when my mp3-player’s battery still works and I have cigarettes. I can reach my parent’s house and the surrounding woods in 1.5 hours by train.

And the worst?

The rising right-wing extremists, the general viennese pessimistic mood, and the horrendous high taxes on work compared to quasi non existent taxes on gainings from financial speculation, but I’m aware that Vienna / Austria shares this problem with many countries.

Finish this line for me:

In 5 years time I will be … probably pretty much doing the same thing: taking photographs and making graphic design.

My one bad habit is … partial misanthropy.

I’ve been listening to lots of … Old School Hip Hop and Funk lately – one of my favorite music genres during my adolescence. And Metallica, again.

Currently on show at Sprüth Magers London is an exhibition of new work by German artist Thomas Demand in his first solo show in London since 2009.

Demand’s photography focuses on detailed re-enactments of specific and familiar places, public or private sites often loaded with social and political meanings. The settings are made with paper and card that he photographs as the basis for his finished artworks. These life sized models are highly detailed, yet they retain subtle but deliberate flaws to disrupt the viewer’s comfort with the scene.

In this series of work, Demand captures everyday moments and objects. The artist started working on the series in 2008, using the camera on his phone to take images of peculiar arrangements he came across while carrying out his day to day activities. These observations were unrelated to mediated narratives or other references outside the image itself; they were there simply because the artist noticed them. These were then translated into paper sculptures and formally straightforward images, with no elaborate viewpoints, lighting or other tricks. The title The Dailies refers to the daily rushes from film, the leftover images from the cutting room floor.

This season the husband and wife duo deliver a visual feast of gaudy Versace-esque emblems, fun house fonts and plenty of tie dye. Today, Sweet and Sound popped down to The Goodhood Store to check out the latest arrivals (think dip dye knitwear for women and gold appliqued sweatshirts for men) soon to be available on their online store. But for now, here’s whats had us hovering the cursor over the ‘Buy’ button from the minute it dropped.

Two exciting exhibitions open today at the Michael Hoppen Gallery; Alex Prager’s Compulsion, as well as images from Christer Strömholm’s Les Amies de la Place Blanche.

Alex Prager – Compulsion

The exhibition will feature a selection of colour photographs from the series, as well as the artist’s new short film, La Petite Mort, with accompanying film stills. The exhibition will be shown simultaneously in London, Los Angles and New York. Inspired by the photography of Weegee and Enrique Metinides, and films such as Metropolis and Un Chien Andalou, Compulsion confirms Prager’s vivid cinematic aesthetic.

Christer Strömholm

“These are images from another time…These are images of people whose lives I shared…These are images of women – biologically born as men- that we call ‘transsexuals’. As for me, I call them ‘my friends of Place Blanche’. This friendship started here, in the early 60s and it still continues.” Christer Strömholm, 1983.

The images on show are from Strömholm’s eminent body of work Les Amies de la Place Blanche. These famous portraits of transvestites depict individuals living on the periphery of society, enduring ‘the roughness of the streets,’ however there is a delicacy and poignancy that emanates from Strömholm’s portraits in contrast to their gritty setting.

Real Gold presents ‘Magnitude’, a sculpture show uniting five young artists and ten sculptures in the energy of dialogue. Each artist, while working with similar industrial materials, has pursued their own conceptual path to come together for the first time within the show. Each artist presents two pieces, the exhibiting of which is collaborative with another artist, devoid of an external curator.

This series of physical pairings interrogates the nature of dialogue between both the artists and their pieces, the independent and the communal.

How do forms mirror?
How do forms oppose?
Which is supported by the other?
Which is greater than the other?
This is a show of magnetism and magnitude.

The series is all about presenting nature in all it’s glory, lo-fi nature, with a twist.
